Managing Conflict

Participants will learn about their own personal approach to handling conflict and better understand the consequences of conflict in a work setting. Participants will also learn specific communication skills to better address conflict, and will be provided the opportunity to practice those skills. This workshop takes two hours or more to complete and can be extended to provide additional time for skill building.

Learning objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand their own style of handling conflict and how other people may handle conflict;
  • understand and implement communication skills helpful in addressing conflict;
  • better understand how cultural differences may contribute to some types of conflict; and
  • know the resources available to assist in conflict resolution.

Optional self-assessment tool

Departments or university organizations may opt to provide workshop participants with an opportunity to complete the Conflict Dynamics Profile (CDP). This self-assessment is completed online prior to the workshop and only takes about 25 minutes to complete. Each participant will receive a confidential report that provides valuable feedback on how the participant approaches conflict. There is a charge of approximately $30 plus shipping and handling costs per participant for the CDP assessment and individual development guide.

This workshop is available on request to department or work groups. There is no fee for the workshop itself. However, fess are associated with the CDP assessment as noted above. To schedule a workshop, contact Avery Bakeley at 540-231-0448.
